My Turn Theater provides the tools, opportunity and support for adults with disabilities to experience the comraderie and sense of achievement found in performance theater.
Adults with disabilities (physical or intellectual) rarely get the chance to participate in live theater. Our actors do not need any experience in theater to participate. They are accompanied throughout rehearsals and performances by shadow actors. These companions are volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life and often these relationships continue long after the shows close.
With financial assistance through grants and donations, and creative help from the theater community, we create that opportunity. We present one fully produced musical annually and strive to add a second if funding permits, maintaining the highest standards in production values and providing a safe, accepting and encouraging environment.
We've done this before. Wendy Carroll founded Out of the Shadows Theater in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in 2016. With the help of the community we produced "Beauty and the Beast" to sold out performances at the beautiful Kroc Theater. The audience was incredibly responsive to this amazing theater experience, leading to three more productions in 2017, 2018 and 2019. "Fiddler on the Roof", "Mary Poppiins" and "The Music Man" were all enthusiastically received. In 2020, Covid temporarily closed our doors.
Out of the Shadows Theater returned in 2021 with "Bye Bye Birdie", this time under the management of others, as I had moved to Spokane, WA eager to bring these opportunities to a whole new group people who deserve a chance.
"My Turn Theater" was launched in December 2021, presenting our first Spokane production in Sept 2022 at the beautiful Bing Crosby Theater.
Wendy Carroll was a producer at Walt Disney Studios and an actress in Canada, Los Angeles, Nashville, Coeur d'Alene and Spokane.
We are so excited to bring this theatrical experience to such a deserving, and often overlooked, group of talented individuals.
